    Our teaching practices are based on a traditional three-level sequence beginning with a classical approach to foundational skill-building. Students then master techniques beyond the foundations and develop personal narratives. Finally, students unify their technical and conceptual visions. We offer a variety of 5-week courses every term.

  • Workshops

    Workshops are an excellent way to receive comprehensive training in a short amount of time. We offer intensive single day and extended weekend workshops. We hold a limited class size to better accommodate individual needs and goals. The topic of every workshop varies and is either taught by our director or a visiting artist.

  • Seminars

    Our seminars are directed under the leadership of Ian Factor and are tailored to fit the research interests of each student. Emphasis is placed on accessibility, interactivity, and creativity. Students will develop the skillset necessary for accurate theoretical research and practice. Seminar sizes are limited to ensure adequate one-on-one instruction.

  • Lectures

    All of our lectures are thoughtfully crafted to provide flawless communicative delivery. They’re offered throughout the year by visiting artists, local community members, and educators at Factor Fine Art. Topics span all forms of the visual arts, music, literature, and film. Our lectures also function as social events where ideas are shared.

  • Tours

    Join us for weekend art tours of New York and Boston, two cities acclaimed for their roles in art history, preservation, and appreciation. Accommodation, transportation, ticketing and breakfasts are all included in the initial fees. Our tours highlight the importance of museums from The Metropolitan Museum of Art to the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.

  • Abroad

    Our international program is designed to offer students an exclusive opportunity to study in one of the most beautiful and inspiring locations. Join us at Tenuta Di Spannocchia, Tuscany, Italy for a week of Plein Air painting and drawing instruction, historic tours and cultural immersion including two full day trips exploring the magical renaissance towns of Florence and Siena.

Tracks of Study

There are several tracks of study for students at Factor Fine Art. From professional artists to hobbyists, there is a path for everyone. Placement will be determined through the registration process. The appropriate track is based on the individual's desired level of training and commitment.

Course Catalog

  • Animation- Traditional + Digital

    Begin by learning the art of traditional 2d animation with the use of celluloid (Cel) sheets. Advance through the study of technical computer animation using Adobe products.

  • Appreciation of the Visual Arts

    This course offers students an in-depth introduction to the visual arts and its’ history. Students also gain an understanding of the basic elements and principles of design.

  • Business + Ethics

    A course essential to all artists, Business and Ethics details the art of communicating in the industry, building your name, selling your work, and the ethics of it all.

  • Color Theory + Color Mixing

    Gain a crucial understanding of perception and our relationship with color. Students will acquire knowledge of the language of color, its theories, concepts, and application.

  • Contemporary Critical Discourse

    An academic-minded style of training. CCD accommodates discussion, debate, and critique of historical concepts. Realize your significance in the canon of the art world.

  • Drawing (B&W)

    Offered as a three-part sequence, artists advance through an in-depth progression, learning line, and value development. The series finishes with complex cast + still life.

  • Figure Drawing / Painting

    Artists advance through an in-depth progression, starting with classical human anatomy. The instruction moves into motion and narrative. Offered as both drawing and painting courses.

  • Illustration

    Offered as a three-part sequence, Illustration introduces the artist to the field’s many facets. Visualize ideas, and learn to use traditional and digital techniques to illustrate your story.

  • Landscape Painting (En Plein Air)

    Students will learn how to master the art of open-air painting. Visualize and recreate landscapes in constant motion. Capture the brilliance of Maine’s natural environments.

  • Oil Painting

    Offered as a three-part sequence, Painting I, II, and III focus on teaching artists to properly utilize their medium, cultivate individualistic style, and establish strong methods of practice.

  • Portrait Drawing / Painting

    Create life-like portraits and work with models during this in-depth study of the face and head. Examine structure, detailed anatomy, and application processes. Offered as painting and drawing courses.

  • Watercolor Painting

    Master material use, surface manipulation, and the essential techniques. Indulge in the joy of applying this transparent medium to create and build depth, color and lively images.

  • Photography for the Artist

    This course begins with the fundamentals of photography for artist’s reference, camera functions, exposure, lighting, and composition. It then advances into digital editing using Adobe products.

  • Portfolio Preparation

    Develop, strengthen, and present your professional portfolio. Students analyze visual aesthetics, continuity, and narrative while producing powerful works for their collections.

  • Sculpting the Figure

    Learn the basics of human anatomy, structure, form, movement, and body mechanics. This course uses oil-based clay for students to easily learn to realistically sculpt the human figure.
